Synopsis
After World War II, a steamship is taking the Russian émigré Alexei Golovin, his French wife and son back to his mother country, the Soviet Union.
The successful doctor and his wife are full of hope. Like the many other emigrants who left Russia after the 1917 revolution, he is returning not to the country of the Bolsheviks but to the country which has defeated fascism. Attracted by the Stalinist propaganda, emigrants are willing to believe that the repression of the thirties is already history and that now they will be able to live freely in their dear mother country. But the hopes break down at once. From the ship’s gangway, Alexei Golovin and his wife Marie see armed soldiers ready to open fire at any moment...
